About

Who are we and why are we the worst??

The World’s Worst Wagga Guild was established in 2023 on unceded Wurundjeri Land by Fiona Waters and Ruby Hoppen. Fiona and Ruby are wonky scrap quilters who focus on sustainable textile practices, and bringing people together. Fiona’s work expresses her queer identity, and Ruby’s seeks to reveal the experience of single motherhood.

They believe that giving it your ‘worst’ can in fact be giving it your ‘best’ – this is why the Guild was named after the ‘world’s worst wagga’ which is a quilt that was declared the worst in the world, but is now an important piece of Australian quilting history.

In community spaces they run accessible sewing workshops that focus on teaching foundational skills, and supporting people to realise their unique creative visions and be proud of them! They also run UFO Club (UnFinished Objects Club) a series of drop in sessions aiming to help people finish craft projects they can’t finish.

The World’s Worst Wagga Guild works to democratise art making, foster community connections, promote wellbeing, reduce textile waste and increase people’s creative confidence.

The guild supports human connection to mirror scrap quilting – lots of different fabrics, patterns, stories, textures, wear, tear and memories all bound together to make something unique and beautiful.

The World’s Worst Wagga has held workshops and exhibitions in collaboration with:

  • Room to Create Residency, City of Yarra
  • Neighbourhood Justice Centre Exhibition
  • Belgium Avenue Neighbourhood House Events
  • Brunswick Neighbourhood House
